Chores and Smarts ;)

Jacob has been really interested in learning to read lately. He has always been able to memorize things quickly - he could sing you the alphabet song when he was about 14 months old. I have been so excited lately because he actually identifies the letters instead of just reciting something memorized. He loves finding letters he can put together and read, and has started reading simple words. Yay! The other morning he was playing in his room by himself for quite a while (mostly with books), and later that day I was in his room with him and I noticed something on his bed. Over a year ago Rachel got Jacob this ABC puzzle/book and he has always loved it...this time he had a purpose:
I noticed that he had all the letters in his name...he got so excited and told me "Mom, I got all the letters and I was making my name! And I even had room for the 'T' for my name Thomas (his middle name)!" I was excited for him! Sometimes I am surprised at the things he picks up, and it is amazing to see the last 3 years of everyday things and routines come together and come alive with his creativity and craving to learn.
He also has a fascination with "all" words (tall, ball, small...etc). He spells them and rhymes with them - its really fun to watch. I didn't set out to introduce reading now, but when you see things in your child and that desire and thirst to learn - you just have to run with it. I am so excited for Jacob - here we go!
I took a picture of the pre-breakfast table from last Saturday because Jacob set the table all by himself! He was so happy with himself - it was just cute!
3 is a great and challenging age. I have had several moments when I remember something Pres. Monson spoke about in a Stake Conference broadcast (before he became the Prophet). He spoke about child development, and reminded parents that children learn the most at the age of 3 (I am totally summing it up here). I think about that especially when I get frustrated with him, haha. Being a mom is certainly an adventure into the unknown, but being his mom has changed me in ways nothing else could. I try to teach him, and he is also teaching me.

I love the sweet relationship you have with your son. This post reminds me of the way she said she raised me -- she said she followed my lead -- when I was excited about something, she followed me and built on that excitement as much as possible! Way to go Ruth! You are a great mom and obviously are doing such a wonderful job providing a nurturing environment for Jacob Thomas. Such a proud, strong name!

That is so awesome! I can't believe he is already learning to read! That sort of frightens and excites me for that age. :) You are such a sweet mom. I always love to read your little blogs about Jacob. The things you write are so sweet and endearing. I love it. It reminds me to appreciate being a mom.
